5 The inhabitants of Samaria will fear
For the ^{▼▼ So with some ancient versions; Heb calves
,} ^bcalf of ^cBeth-aven.
Indeed, its people will mourn for it,
And its ^didolatrous priests ^{▼▼ Or who used to rejoice over}will cry out over it,
Over its ^fglory, since it has departed from it.
6 The thing itself will be carried to ^gAssyria
As tribute to ^{▼▼ Or the avenging king or the great king
,} ⁱKing Jareb;
Ephraim will ^{▼▼ Lit receive shame}be ^kseized with shame
And Israel will be ashamed of its ^lown counsel.
7 Samaria will be ^mcut off with her king
Like a stick on the surface of the water.
8 Also the ⁿhigh places of Aven, the ^osin of Israel, will be destroyed;
^pThorn and thistle will grow on their altars;
Then they will ^qsay to the mountains,
“Cover us!” And to the hills, “Fall on us!”
